The History of Kawasaki®
Even the biggest legends have to start somewhere. Kawasaki is well-known today as a leader in the powersports world, but the company came from humble beginnings. If you've ever wondered how they grew into the industry titan they are today, read on to learn more!
History in the United States
It took many years after Kawasaki launched before it emerged in the American market, which took place in the mid-1960s. Known as the American Kawasaki Motorcycle Corporation, this branch of the company built off of the Japanese tradition of manufacturing. But they also tailored their models to deliver what the Americans wanted: heavy and powerful bikes with impressive performance.
They set up their first factory in an old meat warehouse in Chicago. Operating under the brand Omega, they built two-stroke models. They eventually released the Samurai and Avenger models to meet the American demand.
Continued Innovation
Kawasaki saw early success in the American market, largely due to its ability to keep a finger on the pulse of customer demand. It didn't take long before it earned a position as a premier manufacturer of superbikes globally, which it did in 1969 with the unveiling of the Mach III. This was followed a few years later with the Z1, which was the most powerful four-cylinder and four-stroke engine ever made. The company continued this legacy of updating and improving its product offering, which helped earn loyalty from customers around the world. They also worked to make a unified distribution network to offer improved customer service to the Kawasaki dealers and the customers.
Expanding Into Other Markets
Kawasaki built off of its success in the motorcycle world to develop products in other industries as well. In 1973, it offered its first personal watercraft option. In 1981, it unleashed its first ATV. This model had only three wheels, which was standard for ATVs at the time. In 1985, Kawasaki produced their first four-wheeled model.
